As a resident at Grant Medical Center, you will practice the full scope of family medicine, while caring for some of the most vulnerable populations in downtown Columbus and the surrounding neighborhoods. You will learn how to engage patients as partners in their care and work to close health equity gaps, by respecting and responding to their diverse needs and influences.

Build Knowledge and Expertise
We are a community-based family medicine residency providing experience in a large, urban hospital with access to extensive specialty care.
Residents in our three-year, ACGME-approved program are exposed to a wide range of clinical encounters and have the opportunity to serve a diverse patient population. You will begin managing your own patients during your intern year and have autonomy with support in decision-making. We offer a robust outpatient program, an active inpatient and obstetrics presence, and training in a wide variety of procedures. At the heart of our curriculum is an emphasis on continuity of care, resident wellness and scope of practice.

- Areas of Concentration

You will have the option to tailor your educational experience by opting into Areas of Concentration. This dedicated time allows you to explore an area of family medicine you are interested in without narrowing your scope of practice. Areas of Concentration include additional longitudinal components, conference and research opportunities, and elective experiences in advocacy, global health, faculty development, geriatrics, HIV care, hospital medicine, LGBTQ+ care, reproductive health, sports medicine and urban underserved.
- Outpatient Competencies

Most residents graduate with competencies in the following areas:
- Group visit training
- Medication-assisted treatment
- Motivational interviewing
- Brief, behavioral-based therapy
- Skin biopsies, laceration repair, incisions and drainage
- Cyst removal
- Joint and soft tissue injections, and cryotherapy
- Nexplanon and IUD removal and insertion
- Endometrial biopsies
- Office-based ultrasound
Elective time can be spent obtaining additional competencies, including HIV care, gender-affirming care, vasectomies, vacuum aspiration, toenail removal, osteopathic manipulative medicine and colposcopy.
- Resident Wellness

Our residents and faculty value and prioritize wellness. Interns have a rotation dedicated to wellness, residents receive dedicated lectures and time for wellness, and we’ve built a culture of supporting each other through vulnerability and growth. This is maintained through longitudinal activities, including residency Schwartz rounds, support groups, advisor and mentor relationships, and the general kindness our residents and faculty show each other at and outside of work.
